Body found in search of missing 16-year-old Kiely Rodni

A volunteer dive group says it found a body while searching for missing California teen Kiely Rodni, who was last seen at a massive high school farewell party in Truckee, northeast of Sacramento, on August 6. Law enforcement has not confirmed the finding.

“We just found Kiely Rodni,” the volunteer group, called Adventures with Purpose, wrote on Facebook on Sunday. The group said her car was submerged in 14 feet of water in Prosser Lake. The group said the license plate of the vehicle matches the one that was previously released by police to help identify Rodni’s car, a silver 2013 Honda CRV.

The group said it had notified law enforcement and Rodni’s family and that it would host a live stream announcement on Monday to provide further information.

Law enforcement has not yet confirmed the group’s findings, saying that the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Placer County Sheriff’s Office and FBI are still investigating. Authorities are hosting their own press conference at 2 p.m. ET.

On Sunday, police said they had several detectives and investigators across multiple agencies assigned to the case and that they have reviewed more than 1,800 tips related to Rodni’s disappearance. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team had conducted an underwater search last Thursday, but officials said they didn’t locate her or her car at that time.

Adventures with Purpose said it would assist in Rodni’s case on August 15. The dive team typically takes on cold cases, not active investigations.

The volunteer, group, which has more than 2.4 million subscribers on YouTube, says it has helped solve 23 missing person cold cases since 2019.

Earlier this year, they found the body and car of Pennsylvania man James Amabile 24 feet underwater. Amabile went missing in December 2003 after he called a babysitter to say he was running late in picking up his two daughters.

Search for Kiely Rodni: Divers Find Body Inside Vehicle Underwater

A volunteer dive team says it found a car in a reservoir in search for Placer County teen missing for two weeks

Divers searching for a missing 16-year-old girl said they found a car with a body inside it in a Northern California reservoir, not far from where she attended a huge party weeks ago. The FBI was at the scene as authorities worked to confirm its identity, the sheriff’s office said.

Volunteer divers with a group called Adventures with Purpose said they found Kiely Rodni, of Truckee, on Sunday inside her car, which they said came to rest upside down under about 14 feet of water in the Prosser Reservoir. Their message on Facebook said the family had been informed. A website set up by her family was updated Sunday to say that the search was suspended due to unconfirmed reports.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office planned a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday to describe the findings.

Rodni was last seen Aug. 6 near the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, attending a party with hundreds of young people, police said.

Her friend, Sami Smith was at the party with her and said Rodni had been planning to spend the night at the campground.

Friends and family feared she had been kidnapped. Her phone had been out of service since the party, and her 2013 silver Honda CRV had not been found.

Marine units from three local sheriff’s offices searched the reservoir. The search grew to a wide area of California and Nevada and involved at least 16 local, state and federal enforcement agencies. Dozens of family and friends also searched and offered a $50,000 reward.

Law enforcement has not confirmed that it is Rodni’s body. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office will hold a press conference on Monday.

A body and car have been found in a Truckee lake where authorities and dive teams have been searching for 16-year-old missing teen Kiely Rodni for the past two weeks.

LiveCopter 3 footage showed the car being pulled from Prosser Creek Reservoir Sunday evening and tarps were brought out to cover the vehicle. (See video below.)

Law enforcement has not confirmed that the remains are Rodni’s. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said it was out at the scene to investigate the dive team’s findings along with officials from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and other agencies.

There will be a press conference Monday at 11 a.m. at the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District.

A representative for Rodni’s family told KCRA 3 the family did not have anything to share until it received communication from law enforcement.

The specialty search and recovery dive team called Adventures With Purpose (AWP) started searching for the teen on Friday. They confirmed to KCRA 3 that a matching vehicle description with human remains were found at Prosser Creek Reservoir.

Rodni was last seen on Aug. 6 at a large party with hundreds of like-aged teens at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, which is next to the lake. The teen disappeared seemingly without a trace.

Authorities said the last known ping from Rodni’s cellphone was made the same night around 12:30 a.m. near the lake.

At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Adventures With Purpose posted on Facebook about its findings. By 4:50 p.m., KCRA 3 arrived at the scene and saw law enforcement activity there.
