The growth phase, or anagen, is the longest of the four. Hairs go through the anagen stage for three to five years. However, some hairs might keep growing for seven years. During anagen, when the hairs continue to develop until they are entirely dead, the hair follicles produce a lot of hair. The anagen phase of scalp hair lasts longer than pubic or face hair.

The catagen transitional phase comes after the anagen phase. Over the course of 10 days, the hair follicles shrink and the growth decreases. Even when it separates from the hair follicle during its final days of growth, the hair stays on the scalp. Three to five percent of hairs are always in the catagen phase.

  1. Telogen

Following the interphase transition phase is the resting period known as telogen. A hair will stay in place after it stops growing for around three months. New hairs start to grow in the hair follicles during this time. At any given time, about 10 and 15 percent of hairs are in the telogen phase.

  1. Exogen

The telogen phase can be thought of as continuing into the exogen phase. It could last for two to five months. During exogen, hair that has been severed from the follicle and is not growing may fall out. When you sleep, wash, or brush your hair, this hair may fall out. As old hairs fall out during the exogen phase, new hairs are already budding in the hair follicles.
