Zach Wilson got good news from his surgery on Tuesday to repair his injured knee.
There was no additional damage beyond his initial diagnosis, and the New York Jets quarterback could be ready for a Week 1 return, according to multiple reports. The Jets don’t intend to rush him back until he’s ready.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reports that Wilson’s surgery was “deemed a success” and that “there were no surprises” after his initial diagnosis of a bone bruise and torn meniscus. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that “Week 1 is in play” for Wilson. Both reported that the Jets won’t play him until he’s 100%.
Wilson injured his right knee during Friday’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He fell to the turf after planting his right leg while scrambling and came up limping after the non-contact injury.
He did not return to the game. The injury was to the same knee that sustained a PCL sprain in 2021 and sidelined the then-rookie for four games.

Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft, completed 55.6% of his passes for 179.5 yards per game as a rookie while throwing nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 starts. The Jets are hoping to see significant progress from Wilson in his second season, and his injury presented a setback. Tuesday’s news that there was no further damage to his knee is a best-case scenario.
Veteran Joe Flacco is Wilson’s backup and will presumably take his place behind center during the regular season until Wilson is healthy enough to return. The Jets open their regular season against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 11.

Jets’ Zach Wilson Has No Further Damage to Knee, AP Source Says; May Return for Week 1
Zach Wilson and the New York Jets received some good news after a few days of worrying about the quarterback’s right knee.
Wilson had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus and remains on track to return in a few weeks, a person with knowledge told The Associated Press.
Wilson, who also has a bone bruise in the knee, flew to Los Angeles to have the procedure performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Wilson’s meniscus was trimmed and ElAttrache found no additional damage than initially believed, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce results of the surgery.
That timeline means the Jets could still potentially have their starting quarterback for Week 1. However, the team will likely be cautious with Wilson before getting him back on the field.
ESPN first reported that no additional damage was found during Wilson’s surgery.
Wilson was initially expected to miss two to four weeks with a bone bruise and meniscus tear in his right knee, and the team was optimistic that would remain the case.
But the timeline for how long the second-year quarterback could be sidelined would be determined by the surgery on the meniscus and whether it needed to be trimmed or fully repaired.
It was initially feared that Wilson suffered a serious — and potentially season-ending — knee injury during the second offensive series of New York’s 24-21 preseason-opening win at Philadelphia last Friday night. Tests after the game indicated the ACL in the knee was intact, and an MRI on Saturday morning revealed the bone bruise and torn meniscus.
Joe Flacco could still start the regular-season opener against Baltimore — his former team — on Sept. 11 if Wilson isn’t ready.
